Columbia Gorge Iron Sculptor
HELLO...I am Alan Root, an Oregon-born Iron Sculptor. I have been creating Iron Art for over 4 decades.. I attempt to emulate the world around me through iron imagery and found objects....my approach to art includes assemblage...iron imagery and some kinetic pieces... I hope my art comes off as whimsical and thought provoking ..(.The piece pictured above are the Mosier Cemetery Gates in which I created and donated to the City of Mosier in 2012...I have several generations of ancestors buried there.)
I work primarily with found objects (vintage farm, logging equipment and machinery) and iron imagery that I have created with a Plasma cutter. I utilize welding and steel fabricating skills I began learning when I was 19 as an Apprentice Ornamental Ironworker...I later owned a fully equipped blacksmithing shop in Mosier Oregon (1977-81)...and I have developed Plasma cutting skills to add to the mix...MY range of creations include free standing Out Door Sculptures, bike racks, planters, wrought iron stools, signage, gates, bird feeders, planters etc etc.....( The piece above '2 Questions' was donated to The City of The Dalles (2018) and sets in front of The Dalles Library)

My Inspiration comes from the landscaping and wildlife around me.I am influenced by other Iron Artists such as David Smith and Sandy Calder and Rauschenberg for his assemblage art...I currently have 36 pieces of Outdoor Iron Art Sculptures through out the Columbia River Gorge...Mosier, Hood River and The Dalles and several public pieces in Portland, Oregon..(.The piece above is titled...'EXPECT the UNEXPECTED, EMBRACE the OCCASIONAL MYSTERY...IN A WORLD TEETERING on the BRINK of UNRESOLVED ISSUES, UNCERTANITY and CHAOS..SEEK OUT the BALANCE and HARMONY, BETWEEN the LIGHT and DARK FORCES'...quite. often, as with this piece I hear a voice within the process that tells me what words want to be expressed...this piece was in the Best of The Gorge Exhibit @ Columbia Center for the Arts...in Hood River in (2018)...now resides in The Dalles Library)
